It is very important to back up your data on a regular basis, especially data stored
on your hard drive. Backing up your data to CD is a very easy and cost effective
method. Most campus computers are equipped with a CD burner and have the
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 software pre-installed. This document contains
instructions for backing up your data to CD using Roxio. If you do not have
Roxio installed on your computer or need assistance, please contact the Help
Desk at 832-1720.
To Burn a CD with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5:
1. Click on Start, then All Programs
2. Click on Helper Apps and Utils
3. Click on Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
4. Click on Applications, then Easy CD Creator
5. Easy CD Creator will open to a new Untitled
Data CD Project (NOTE: If you would like to burn a music CD for
use with a CD player, click on File/New CD Project/Music CD).
The Untitled Data CD Project window is
divided into two parts: the top part is the
Source window and the bottom part is the Data
CD Project window.
6. Insert a blank CD-R in to the CD burner drive on your computer. Blank
CD-R discs can be purchased from any office supply store or ordered
through CCSU’s office supply vendor. Make sure the CD-R you are using
is brand new (NOTE: One way to check if a CD has been used is to hold the bottom side of the CD to the
light and look for a burnt ring. If there is a ring around the CD in the middle, it has already been used. The ring
closest to the center and near the edge does not count as a burnt ring).
7. Once the CD burner drive has detected the blank
CD-R disc, a generic CD name (usually a group of numbers)
will appear next to the CD icon in the Data CD Project
window. You may rename the CD to anything you would
like; simply right-click the generic name, click on Rename,
then type the new name and hit Enter (NOTE: This name will appear on
the cd rom drive of “My Computer” when you insert the CD into any computer).

8. Using the Source window, navigate to the drive containing the files you
want to burn on to the CD by clicking on the
down arrow under Select source files and
selecting the drive (for example, your C:
drive or D: drive). You may burn individual
files or entire folders to the CD.
9. From the Source window, drag and drop
the files and/or folders down into the Data
CD Project window. At the bottom of this
window, there is a Status Bar that shows
you how much space you have left on the
CD.
10. After you have added all of the files and/or folders to the
Data Project CD window, click on the Record button.
11. The Record CD Setup dialog box will open.
Verify the proper CD burner drive is
selected, then click on the Start Recording
button.
12. When the recording finishes, both progress
bars will display 100% and the Disc Progress section will display “CD
created successfully”. You may now remove the completed CD from the
CD burner drive. Be sure to label the outside of the CD using a CD label
or permanent marker so that you can easily identify its contents later.
