104 CLASSICS MONTHLY AUGUST 2015
W
axing a car on a Sunday
afternoon is one job you
really dont need anything
more specialised for than a
handful of old rags and a bottle of your
favourite polish.
Which is all well and good if your classic
has pristine paintwork without the myriad
scratches and blemishes which appear from
everyday use.
Its incredible what a transformation can
be achieved bymopping’ a car’s paintwork
and its a process used by professional
bodyshops to achieve a high gloss finish on
new paintwork. Essentially a specialist
finishing compound is used in conjunction
with an electric or air polisher to flat out the
imperfections and then buff the surface back
up to a gloss.
For this of course you do need rather
more than a fistful of old T-shirts and
although it used to be the preserve of
bodyshops, the polishers are now available
for under £50, meaning its feasible to have a
go at home.
In addition to the polisher, you’ll need a
suitable polishing head and you can easily pay
a fortune for these from a paint factor.
Silverline’s six-piece kit however, comes in at
just £14.66 and includes a backing pad with
the standard thread to attach it to the sander
spindle, plus six different grades of polishing
head.
The hook and loop system (that’s Velcro by
any other name, trademark lawyers) makes it
simple to swap between different grades of
foam head and the selection includes coarse
(yellow), medium (blue), black (soft) and red
(ultra soft) as well as the white which is
described as ‘firm’.
We tried the Silverline kit in a proper
polisher they look much like a regular angle
grinder but run much more slowly, typically at
less than 3000 rpm.
It will also fit larger angle grinders and if
you have a variable speed tool then there’s no
reason you can’t use this kit with them – if
you can stand to hold the weight for the time
it takes to compound a whole panel, that is.
In use, we found the Silverline heads to
work every bit as well as the pro-branded
items we’ve used in the past and at under
£15 for six, its a great product especially
since the different foam heads are available
separately too, meaning you can use them
with the same backing pad.
VERDIcT: Quick and easy
If you’ve got a suitable polisher/sander/
grinder then all you need is a tub of the right
compound and this kit to have a go at
pro-standard paint renovation. Just be careful
on sharp edges and corners to avoid going
through the paint.
